A woman in Kano narrowly escaped death after being brutally attacked by suspected cultists at her residence along Dambatta Way in the early hours of Monday.
The victim, Ogunenika Sefunmi, was reportedly targeted by members of the Eiye Confraternity, a notorious cult group, who scaled her fence, killed her dog, and assaulted her with planks and clubs.
Sefunmi, currently recovering in a private hospital, recounted her ordeal, stating, “They dragged me outside, hitting me repeatedly. When they thought I was dead, they fled the scene. Even neighbors believed I was gone.”
The attack is believed to be linked to a previous incident in January 2021 when Sefunmi’s brother, Ogunenika Abiodun, was murdered by the same cult group in Ondo state. Fearing for her safety, Sefunmi had relocated to Kano, but the assailants traced her to her new location.
Sefunmi however expressed gratitude to passersby who rushed her to the hospital, saying, “If not for their help, I wouldn’t have survived.”
She called on the government to strengthen local vigilante groups to combat the growing menace of cult-related violence and protect law-abiding citizens from such attacks.
Police authorities in Kano are yet to comment on the incident.
