President of Nigeria Interventional Radiologists, Prof. Ahmed Ahijo, has noted that “Kano is the first state to initiate post-graduate training in Radiology in Northern Nigeria.”
Leading members of West African College of Surgeons and National postgraduate Medical College on an assessment visit to Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Hospital in Kano yesterday, Ahijo said he was satisfied with the level of facilities and infrastructure at the Radiology Department of the hospital, adding that Kano was poised to take the lead in producing radiologists locally.
He, however, said from the inspection the team conducted, Kano was due and ready for the main accreditation if some avoidable lapses were corrected and commended the management of the Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Hospital for conceiving the idea to run the post-graduate training and equally praised the Ministry of Health and the Hospitals Management Board for the success of the programme.
In his response, the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Usman Tijjani Aliyu, commended the Kano state government for reforming the health sector and expressed the determination and commitment of the hospital towards ensuring the entire success of the programme.
Similarly, the team had also visited the new Giginyu Specialist Hospital which would be officially commissioned by the President on Wednesday along with the Zoo Road Hospital and discovered that there was no Radiology department in the North-west that “can be compared to that of Giginyu Hospital as it has all that is needed for a befitting Radiology department.”
