Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, has charged political leaders in the country to put the interest of the people above vested ones.
The emir made the call when he paid a congratulatory visit to the governor of Kano state and Senator-elect for Kano Central zone, Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso, at the Government House, Kano, on Wednesday.
“Leaders are elected to serve the people, to protect their interest and to promote their welfare,” the emir said, maintaining that under ideal circumstances, political leaders should be servants of the people who brought them to power through the ballot box.
Sanusi said while people have the right to vote for candidates of their choice, the elected leaders should justify the mandate by being honest and committed to the socio-economic changes promised to Nigerians.
The emir appealed to Governor Kwankwaso, as a Senator-elect, and other legislators-elect from Kano to make legislative presentations that will be in the best interest of Nigerians, especially Kano citizens.
He also urged the state deputy governor and governor-elect, Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, who is also the governor-elect to maintain the policies and programmes of the Kwankwasiyya administration, pointing out that voting for APC candidates in the state is an indication that electorate are satisfied with the leadership style of the present administration in Kano.
Responding, Kwankwaso said Nigerians, irrespective of their differences, should regard the victory recorded by the APC in the recent polls as a victory for all.
The governor assured the people that the APC government would do every possible to make life better for all, adding that what Nigerian needs at this critical period of change is sacrifice so as to win the war against insurgency and corruption which are clogging the country’s wheel of progress.
Kwankwaso thanked the emir for the visit, and appealed to the Kano emirate council to continue enlightening citizens on the importance for education, pointing out that it “is only when people are educated that they can become relevant in the scheme of things nationally and internationally.”
