Kano declares tomorrow public holiday for Islamic Year

Kano state government, through the office of the Acting Governor, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, has declared tomorrow as public holiday to mark the New Islamic Year.

 

In a statement yesterday in Kano, the Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Comrade Mohammed Garba, said the Islamic New Year “which is first month in the Lunar Islamic Calendar coincides with activities marking the nation’s 57th Independent Anniversary celebrations.”

 

Garba, a former two-term president of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), said the Acting Governor of Kano state had directed him to re-assure the people of government’s determination to work hard towards the improvement of the living condition of its citizenry.

He also called on Nigerians to join hands with the government of President Muhammadu Buhari who was determined “to build a peaceful and harmonious country, especially now that Nigeria is facing serious religious and sectional crises, the President needs total prayers for him to overcome these series of problems.” He added that September 22 “is the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic Calendar and marks the beginning of the new Islamic Year 1439 after the Hijra.”
