Kano CP tenders apology to NBA over lawyers’ detention

Sequel to the 48yrs ultimatum given by the Kano Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) over the alleged molestation of two of its members by the Police, the Police Commissioner CP Mohammed Wakil has tendered an unreserved apology to the legal body for the action of his personnel.

Addressing the executives of the association in Kano on Thursday, Wakili said he was at the Secretariat to tender his apology as demanded by the association, considering the fact that lawyers and the Police are indispensable partners in progress.

Wakil said he had high respect for legal luminaries due to their immense importance in the parlance of justice.

According to him, the action of the Police was not a deliberate attempt to make them uncomfortable affirming that the workings of the Nigeria Police would never be complete without the maximum cooperation of legal practitioners.

He said: “I am ready to apologize to you, either in form of press release or in whatever way you want it. I know your worth when it comes to dispensation of justice. Your services are highly needed by anyone seeking legal redress. I have apologized to you for what had happened, and pray to God that the sad episode never happened again”.

Receiving the Commissioner on behalf of members of the association, secretary of the NBA Kano branch Barr Mujtaba Adamu Ameen said the unreserved apology tendered by the Police Commissioner demonstrated his acumen and immense wealth of experience as a professional and discipline dofficer to the core, who deserved emulation by his colleagues.

While appreciating the courage summoned by the Police Commissioner to apologize, the legal luminary also expressed the readiness of the association to work in tandem with the Police in the quest for entrenching justice and fairness at the time when Nigerians were expecting much from the judiciary as an important arm of the government.
