Kano assembly elects Garba-Gasafa speaker

The Kano state House of Assembly has elected the member representing Ajingi Constituency, Alhaji Abdulaziz Garba-Gafasa, as the new speaker of the 9th assembly.

The election followed his nomination by the member representing Dala constituency, Malam Lawan Hussain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) whose motion was seconded by the member representing Gogewa Constituency, Alhaji Salisu Ibrahim-Riruwai, Monday during the first plenary session of the 9th assembly.

Gafasa was the speaker during Governor Malam Ibrahim-Shekarau’s second tenure.

The assembly also elected the member representing Makoda constituency, Hamisu Cidari, as the deputy speaker for the fourth time.

The legislators elected the member representing Warawa constituency, Alhaji Ayuba Labaran-Madari .as the majority leader, and Alhaji Kabiru Alasan-Dashi, representing Kiru constituency as leader of the assembly.

Also a member representing Gezawa constituency, Alhaji Ali Danja was elected as the minority leader, with Alhaji Garba Shehu, representing Kibiya constituency, as the deputy majority leader.

Similarly, the assembly elected Alhaji Ayuba Labaran-Durum representing Kabo constituency as the chief whip, while member representing Kura Garin-Malam, Alhaji Hayatu Dorawa-Sallau was elected the majority whip.

In his acceptance speech after taking oath of office, the new speaker commended the legislators for giving him the mandate to lead the assembly as speaker for the second time.

He assured to carry all members along irrespective of their party differences and pledged to ensure that laws that have direct benefits to the general public are enacted.

The speaker said the 9th assembly would do everything possible to ensure more developmental projects in the state.

According to him, we will work with other arms of government to ensure the state moves forward to compete with other developed countries. “We will ensure the enthronement of legislative autonomy”.
