Kaduna: Okada, keke napep operators defy govt directives

Okada and Keke Napep operators in Kaduna have ignored the order banning their activities in the state.

The state at the wake of the coronavirus pandemic in the country, gave a number of preventive measures aimed at curtailing the spread of the virus.

Some of the measures taken include partial shutdown of markets, ban on large gatherings such as religious worships, wedding and commercial motor bikes and keke napep operations across the state.

However, our correspondent reports that Okada and Keke Napep operators in Zaria have defied the directive of the state which was announced by the state deputy governor, Dr Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe on Wednesday.

Blueprint observed that the motorbike and keke napep riders have been going about their normal businesses despite the ban.

A Zaria resident, Mallam Shehu Maigoro, expressed dissatisfaction over the non-compliance by okada and keke napep operators in the area.

He complained that the attitude of the operators would not help the efforts of the state government in addressing the dreaded pandemic.

Mallam Goro called on government to take decisive measures against violators of the directives.

When contacted, the assistant general manager of the state traffic agency in charge of Zaria, Alhaji Mohammed Salisu, said he was mobilising his men to enforce the ban and  to ensure the operators comply with the directives.

“If it means to make arrest, we will arrest erring operators. We won’t allow them to defy the directive and go free,” Salisu said.
