Kaduna state Assembly yesterday stepped down debate on local government autonomy, preferring the fourth alteration of the Nigeria 1999 Constitution.
The Assembly approved 9 of the alterations, stepped down two and rejected four from the proposed amendments sent by the NationalAssembly.
The sitting which was presided by the Speaker, Alhaji Aminu Shagali, said the alterations included financial autonomy to state Assemblies, local government autonomy, removal of “force”, from the Nigeria Police Force, reduction of age for qualification for political offices, independent candidature, among others.
He further explained that, two of the alterations that were stepped down – local government autonomy and strength of local government administration in Nigeria – would be subjected to further study.
Speaking shortly after the plenary, chairman House Committee on Information, Nuhu Shadalafiya, stressed that if state assembliesare autonomous, the affairs and matters related to them would be handled effectively.
Shadalafiya said stepping down debate on local government autonomy in the proposed Amendment did not mean it has been rejected; rather it implied that there was need to examine the details of amendment to make corrections where needed.
