Th e Niger state chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), has expressed worry over the non-compliance of state governors to the Federal High Court judgment on the autonomy for judiciary across the country.
Th e state chairman of JUSUN, Barr Mahmud Muye, stated this yesterday in Minna during a meeting with the chairman of the Niger state Assembly Committee on Judiciary, Malam Bello Ahmed .
He lamented what he described as “fl agrant disregard for court orders by the state governments” and urged the Assembly to prevail on Governor Abubakar Sani Bello to comply with the court ruling in the state.
He explained that a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja in its judgment in the case fi led against the 36 state governors and the Attorney General of the Federation by JUSUN in 2014, had ordered that autonomy be granted the Judiciary.
He said that it was disheartening that almost three years after the landmark judgment, state governments had continued to fl out the order, adding that the governors’ stance on the lingering matter amounted to contempt.
He said the Union met with the former state Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Abdul Bawa, where agreement was reached on the matter but regretted that the state reneged.
He said the Union was then compelled to lead its member on strike over the development before it was prevailed upon by stakeholders to call off the strike.
Muye said the Union had also met with the state government through the current Attorney General to seek for diplomatic option on the matter but was forced to embark on strike, following government reluctance to implement the judgment.
He therefore urged the committee to intervene by impressing on the state government to do the needful on the matter
