JNI condemns Shimankar clashes, calls for swift investigation

The Plateau state chapter of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), Wednesday said it condemned in totality the unfortunate religious clashes in Shimankar, Shemdam local government area of the state.

It also called on the government to swiftly investigate the incident and prosecute perpetrators to justice.

The JNI under the leadership of the Emir of Wase, Sambo Haruna, in a press release issued by the state secretary, Dr Salim Musa Umar, said the incident was unfortunate coming during Ramadan.

Clashes amongst traditionalist and Muslim youth had ensued Sunday night and lasted till Monday morning, leaving many lives injured, houses and business premises destroyed in Shimankar village.

But the JNI said: “This is unfortunately coming in the holy month of Ramadan where deep spiritual engagements are going on.

“JNI condemns in the strongest terms the violent clashes that occurred which were totally avoidable if tolerance, understanding and wisdom were applied.

“It is important to understand that peace, unity, and-dialogue are the only veritable platforms in resolving misunderstandings thereby avoiding the needless crises,” the JNI said.

The JNI also said it recognises the immediate response of security agencies, stakeholders, including religious and traditional rulers in mitigating the crisis and it is commendable.
