Four hundred and forty (440) vesico virginal fistula (VVF) patients were treated in Jigawa hospital in 2016, with 95 per cent of the patients successfully undergoing operations.
Eleven (11) of the women were admitted between September and November last year at the Jahun VVF Centre, its medical director, Dr. Suleiman Ado has disclosed.
speaking to newsmen in his office in an interview, the medical director said 50 women were admitted in October, 25 of them had repairs via surgery while in September 22 had repairs and in November, 29 were admitted and were operated upon successfully, saying the remaining number were still on admission and receiving treatment.
Ado disclosed further that he could not say whether the number of the VVF patients was increased or declining because he received patients from across the country, stating that majority of those patients were not from Jigawa but from neighboring states, including Niger Republic.
He said 91 per cent of the surgery performed had been successful, pointing out that all those who were operated upon had discharged and trained on various skills and trades for them to be self reliant.
He identified three causes of the scourge namely, early marriage, prolonged labour and ignorance of antenatal visits during pregnancy.
