A group under the auspices of Standup for Women Society,  Sunday called on  governments at all levels , corporate organisations and individuals to accelerate action towards achieving gender equality and equity in the country.

This was contained in a message issued by the  International President of the Standup for Women Society (SWS),  Deborah  Ijadele-Adetona,  to mark the 2025  International Women’s Day which was made  public  by the National Public Relations Officer (NPRO), Billie Nwogu.

The group said gender equity is not only a fundamental human right, but also a cornerstone of sustainable development, peace and prosperity,  adding that SWS would continue to  seek for the protection of women’s rights.

She urged government at all levels , civil society organisations and individuals to safeguard women’s rights, particularly in the face of growing backlash and discrimination.

“The urgency of this moment cannot be overstated and in solidarity with women and girls everywhere, the SWS reaffirm its commitment to protecting women’s rights, promoting empowerment, and ensuring equal opportunities.

“We must empower women and girls through massive investment  in education, healthcare, and economic empowerment programs that will  enable women and girls to reach their full potential.

“We urge governments to adopt and implement legislation to end violence against women and girls in all its forms and we must work towards achieving full and equal decision-making power for women, including through temporary special measures like gender quotas.

“There should also be bold policy changes that will ensure equal pay, equal representation, and equal opportunities for women and girls and as we move forward, we draw inspiration from the countless women and girls who are leading the charge for change,” Deborah stated.
