Rising from a four-day conference held at the Al- Hikmah University, Ilorin, the Islamic Welfare Foundation (IWF) has advocated training of faith leaders on digital ethics and responsible technology use to guide their communities effectively.
The conference also charged faith organisations to empower youth to use technology responsibly to create positive social change, encouraging innovation aligned with ethical values.
This is just as it called on religious institutions to engage with policymakers to create legislation that addresses ethical issues in technology and promotes social justice.
This was contained in a 20-point communiqué jointly signed by IWF’s national coordinator, Dr Hassan Kalejaye and chairman, local organising committee, Dr. Yusuf Suleiman, made available to Blueprint in Ilorin.
The conference was jointly organised by Islamic Welfare Foundation/Al-Hikmah University with the theme “Social and Technology Development Architecture: The Role of Religion,” held from the 3rd to the 7th of November, 2024.
It called on educational institutions, especially those with religious affiliations, to incorporate ethical considerations and religious perspectives into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curricula.
“Faith organisations and religious institutions should consider establishing ethics committees to address ethical issues in technology and social development.
“Religious communities should actively participate in environmental preservation and sustainable practices, fostering a sense of stewardship for the planet,” it added.
