Islamic cleric jailed for 3 month

A Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital, yesterday sentenced an Islamic cleric, Osupa Adini, to three months in prison for stealing and assault.
Adini, 49, who was arraigned on February 22, 2010, along with his wife, Yemisi, was convicted on a six-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, willful damage, assault occasioning harm and giving false information to the police, preferred against him by the state.
Prosecuting Counsel, Mr. Femi Onipede, who called four witnesses, said the offence contravened Section 516(A), 390(a) of the Criminal Code, Vol. 11, Laws of Ondo State 1978 as applicable to Ekiti state.
Defence Counsel, Mr. Rotimi Adabenbe, pleaded for mercy after the court convicted the accused.
Chief Magistrate, Adesoji Adegboye, discharged Adini’s wife for lack of evidence but sentenced the accused to three months on each of the six-count charge.
The sentence is to run concurrently without an option of fine.
