IPOB: Enugu shut, banks, markets, filling station, others closed

Enugu, the Coal City was a ghost of itself in the early hours of Thursday in observance of the commemoration of Biafra Day as instituted the pro-Biafra group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The Biafra Day is  being observed every 30th day of May to remember those that died during the Biafra-Nigeria Civil War of the 60s.

In compliance to 2024 Biafra Day, many  businesses, transport operators, banks, filling stations, markets as well as eateries closed for the day and the major streets such as Zik Avenue, Agbani Road, Presidential Road and Okpara Avenue, were virtually deserted.

The major transport companies had the entrance to their parks under lock and key.

Artisans, roadside mechanics all stayed at home.

Only few tricyclists, popularly known as Keke, were seen plying the streets with few passengers that managed to come out.

A Keke rider told Blueprint that he had to come out to help people get to their destination.

“I had to come out. I know that many will not come out but I came out to help the few that will come out.  Moreover, I came out because I needed money to feed my family,” the Keke rider said.

A trader, name with held, told Blueprint that he decided to stay at home to obey the sit- at-home order even when the government of Enugu state had frowned at such order and told the residents to go about their business.

It was gathered that the incident that took place at Ibagwa in Igbo-Eze South local government area on Wednesday where two people were killed and two vehicles set ablaze forced people to comply with the order.

It was also gathered that in spite of the state government aversion to the sitathome order, many people are in tune with the pro-Biafra agitation, because to them the agitators are fighting a good cause and are angry that IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu is still in detention, hence the big compliance to the order.

Efforts to get the police spokesman Daniel Ndukwe did not yield positive result as he did not  respond to his WhatsApp message to comment on situation on ground.
