Institutes hails Interior Ministry over stand on statutory marriages

The Ministry of Interior has been commended for its efforts at delivering quality services to Nigerians in the conduct of statutory marriages in the country.

President, Governing Council of the Institute of Marriage Administrators and Counsellors of Nigeria, Pastor Oladele Emmanuel Temilade gave this commendation Tuesday in Abuja, after the meeting of the governing council of the Institute.

According to him, “the effort of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior and the Principal Registrar of Marriages in Nigeria, Barr. Georgina Ekeoma Ehuriah, in calling on all stakeholders recently, to come together with team spirit to pursue the same goal of delivering quality services to Nigerians on contracting statutory marriages, is praise worthy and a right step in the right directions.”

The Institute, while calling on the Ministry of Interior to pursue the effort to a logical conclusion, also advocated for synergy among the tiers  and agencies of government handling statutory marriages to make marriage regulation and registration flexible for Nigerians.

The organisation expressed concern on how the sections of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Marriage Act and the Matrimonial Causes Act are being misinterpreted to deliver ambitions that are more of revenue drives, instead of delivering the values of the visions in which these Acts are promulgated to achieve, adding that, “each of these codified powers of government are not in any way contradictory, but most of those who give meanings to them interpret them wrongly and commit citizens to make errors in the ways they contract their marriages.”

Oladele added that the Institute was ready to fulfil its mandate of educating and advising both public and private organisations in respect of the conduct of statutory marriages in Nigeria.

The Institute of Marriage Administrators and Counsellors of Nigeria is a corporate entity with the core objective of educating and giving proactive advice to both public and private institutions handling marriage matters especially statutory marriages in Nigeria, as may concern policy and law of the country.
