A university teacher with the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), Dr Adebayo AjaIa, has advised federal government to equip the nation’s security agencies with adequate and modern equipment.
Ajala, who gave the advice while delivering the NISER monthly lecture entitled: Security Challenges in Nigeria: Which Way Forward?, declared that doing so would enhance security in the country.
He stressed that there was the need for federal government to ensure increase in the security personnel for effective management of security in and around the country, saying “security is the key responsibility of all governments.”
Speaking further, Ajala said to also proffer solution to insecurity in the country, “Nigeria should have an effective community policing as well as the creation of state police.”
The don also identified insufficient and the quality of security personnel as the major challenge against combating the spate of insecurity in the country.
He, however, said the time had come for government to address the high level of poverty, by providing basic infrastructure and services for the people.
Speaking, NISER Director- General, Prof. Olufemi Taiwo, said the aim of the lecture was to suggest strategies capable of addressing the various security challenges in the country, adding,“ we want to know if these challenges are avoidable, which of them are common and what lessons can the country get from its past and how other countries are dealing with challenges.”
