Insecurity: Persistent prayers’ll bring peace to Nigeria – Bishop Onaga

Catholic bishop of Enugu Diocese, Dr. Callistus Onaga has expressed optimism that Nigeria will triumph in the prevailing insecurity in the land that has resulted in killings, kidnappings raping and armed banditry.

He said the only way for Nigerians to triumph over the insecurity is prayers for divine intervention.

“We should be persistent in prayers that peace will return to this country.

“We shall defeat this thing that came to us with prayers,” Onaga said after a procession of all the Roman Catholic faithful in Enugu Wednesday in accordance with directive of the Catholic Bishops in Nigeria that people should pray and mourn so that the danger would be averted.

Onaga who was addressing the faithful dressed  in black after a procession that took them  round some major streets in Enugu and terminated   at the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu, said the people are capable of violence against the insecurity but they chose the godly way to fight insurgency.

“We are capable of trouble but the Church is for peace.  Our God is a God of peace, hence we seek divine intervention for the problem.

The Roman Catholic cleric lamented that governments at all levels  are not doing enough to contain the insecurity and the insurgence, citing the example of the menace of the Boko Haram which government gave the impression that they have been defeated.

“Our leaders are not doing anything, though they say they are doing something.  They said that Boko Haram is no more, that they have defeated Boko Haram, yet they go into churches and mosques to abduct  and  kill people,” he said.

He said he is optimistic that with prayers the dicey situation would be brought under control adding,  ” We have been praying and God will hear our prayers.”

Speaking specifically about the prayer procession, Bishop Onaga said  they dressed in black to “mourn for our brothers and sisters who died because of insecurity.  We dressed in black for the repose of their soul,” he said.
