Insecurity: IGP approves marine police base in Edo

As part of efforts aimed at checkmating the incessant cases of kidnapping and armed robbery, Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has approved a marine Police base in Edo state.
Besides the Marine Police base which would be located in Gelegele, other outposts will be created along waterways and creeks in the state.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr.
Babatunde Kokumo, disclosed this at the weekend when the chairman of Ovia South-West local government area, Comrade Destiny Enabulele and some executive members of the council paid him a visit in his office in Benin City.
Kokumo said: “The problem we have there (Ovia South-West) is that, we have crime and criminals in land, we have crime and criminals in the waters.
“But am glad to tell you that the IGP has approved Marine Police for Edo state for the first time.
It was just yesterday [last Thursday], that the approval from the Inspector-General arrived.
According to him, “Our statutory duty is to provide security for lives and properties.
That we will not fail to do.
The CP promised to deploy an armoured personnel carrier, which according to him, is undergoing refurbishment, to Iguobazuwa, to boost security in the area.
Earlier, the council boss expressed concern over thesecurity situation in the area to the effect that banks which formerly operated at Iguobazuwa, the administrative headquarters of the local government area, closed shops, due to incessant robbery attacks.
