Akwa Ibom state government at the weekend denied media reports that there was a growing insecurity in the state ahead of 2015 general elections.
This is coming against the recent murder of a former election campaign coordinator of Governor Godswill Akapbio, Chief Albert Umanah, in Ukanafun local government area, and the alleged assassination attempt on the immediate past Chairman of Akwa Ibom Investment and Industrial Promotion Council, Mr. Soni Udom.
It also described as “false and baseless” the news that Governor Akpabio had bought more than 1, 000 Toyota Corolla cars, worth N5 billion for distribution to PDP delegates, as a way of influencing them to vote for his preferred candidate, in next year’s governorship election.
The commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, said the allegations were part of desperate moves and propaganda by the opposition to score cheap political points.
He said: “Indication of interest by for politicians to run for election should not be interpreted as tension and insecurity in the state.
“The report was a figment of the reporters and their sponsors’ imagination, as Governor Akpabio administration, has not bought any vehicle, to mobilize support for anybody I the 2015 general elections.
“Election is not about violence and inciting the people against the government, but campaigning on issues and soliciting people’s support for success at the polls.”
