INEC announces date for FCT area council elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reminded political party leaders that primaries for the nomination of candidates for the Anambra state governorship election would begin from the 20th March to 10th April, 2025.

Similarly, the commission also said it approved 2026 area council election in FCT for Saturday 21st February 2026, pointing out that voting would take place in all the designated polling units across the 68 constituencies to elect the six area council chairmen and 62 councilors.

Chairman of the commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who stated these during the first regular consultative meeting with leaders of political parties, said 2025 would be busier than 2024 in terms of elections and electoral activities.

While recalling that the commission had earlier released the timetable and schedule of activities for the Anambra state governorship election holding on Saturday 8th November 2025, he urged the parties yet to forward their schedule of activities for the election to the commission to do so before the end of this week.

He stated that it would make for a better plan for deployment of personnel and resources for the monitoring of party primaries and campaign activities, as well as enable it to avoid the last minute rush with the attendant inability to meet deadlines and unnecessarily dissipate our energy and lean resources.

On the area council elections, the INEC boss said, “As you are aware, the commission is responsible for the area council election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the only part of the country where INEC conducts local government election.”
