Independence celebration: Service Chiefs, DG DSS visit troops in frontlines

Service Chiefs and the Director General, Department of State Security are in Maiduguri to celebrate 57th independence anniversary with troops at the front lines of the battle against Boko Haram terrorists.

The Service Chiefs comprising Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin, Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Ibok-Ette Ibas and Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar and the Director-General of the Department of State Service, Lawal Daura arrived Maiduguri at about 2:30pm on Sunday and head to the Military Command and Control Center, Maimalari Barracks, Maiduguri, where they had a closed door meeting for about two hours.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, Director Defence Information, Maj. Gen. John Enenche said the Service Chiefs also visited the theater command in order to review the strategies that were put in place during their visit in July, 2017.

He said: “We have recorded tremendous achievement since July. The strategies of the army, being the leading force in the operation Lafiya Dole, was reviewed, so also is that of the Air Force – Operation Deep Punch and Operation Ruwan Wuta were reviewed.

“There were some challenges that were identified which are being looked into.”

“The Chief of Defence Staff with other service chiefs and the Director General of the DSS are also here to celebrate the Nigeria’s 57th independence anniversary with troops in the frontlines on behalf of the Commander-in-Chief, President Muhammadu Buhari.”

Enenche said information from members of the public were responsible for the successes so far recorded in the fight against terrorists in the North east, especially from July till date.

He therefore urged the public to continue to provide useful information to the security agencies, using the short code 193, which he said is charges free.
