Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state, Monday, signed into law the bills to increase  to 65 years, retirement age of staff  serving in the tertiary institutions in the state.

The institutions affected in the increment of the retirement age include Benue State Polytechnic Ugbokolo, Benue State College of Education, Oju and Benue State College of Education, Katsina-Ala.

Performing the ceremony at the Government House, Makurdi, Governor Ortom said his administration has also transmitted another law to the State House Assembly to amend and increase the retirement age of primary school teachers to 65.

He said the amendment was necessary to conform with the standard at the federal level, and give room for extension of service years for experienced staff to impact positively on the affected institutions.

He noted that his administration believed in rule of law, which democracy itself is anchored on.

According to governor Ortom, laws were necessary for smooth running of any government.

The governor noted that his administration has enacted more laws than any government that ever existed in the state.

He commended both the 8th and 9th assemblies for their cooperation and speedy passage of the laws.

Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Michael Gusa, who spoke in an interview with newsmen, said the Ortom administration in the past seven years and nine months passed 45 laws for smooth administration in the state.
