The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has exposed how members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) backed out of an earlier agreement at the last minute after yielding to politicians’ plans to rubbish the commission in Imo state.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting covenened to review last Saturday February 25, 2023 Presidential and National Assembly elections in the state, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Imo State, Prof. Sylvia Uchenna Agu, expressed her readiness to deploy both personnel and electoral materials to the areas affected by insecurity including Orlu, Orsu, Oru East local government areas.

She then pleaded with politicians to cooperate with the commission to make the upcoming elections a reality.

Prof Agu, who pleaded with the stakeholders to suggest way forward to ensure a hitch-free House of Assembly elections on Saturday March 11, was advised by stakeholders to also put private transporters in their plans to avoid last minute disappointment from the various unions.

They added that if the transporters were not at their duty posts at 8am on that day, the commission should start making an alternative arrangement immediately.

The stakeholders also advised the REC to always own up to mistakes made by INEC adhoc staff, instead of apportioning blames to them.
