IBB varsity SUG bags award at leadership tournament

The Students Union Government (SUG) of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), in Niger state, has emerged the second best student union government in Nigerian higher institutions.

This was made known at the 2019 edition of the “Students’ Leaders Development Training and Tournament (SLEDT)”.

The tournament, which is an annual event, was hosted by IBBUL and featured a number of universities across the country. This year’s SLEDT was themed, “Raising green leaders for green campus”.

While announcing IBBUL as one of the winners at the grand finale, the founder and director of Lead Transformation Initiative (LTI), Mr Titilayo Femi Kings, explained that the tournament was keenly contested among the participating-schools.

He disclosed that the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM), won SLEDT’s overall ‘Best Student Union Government (SUG) Award’; while IBBUL emerged runners-up. Usmanu Dan-fodio University Sokoto (UDUS) came third in the award category.

Presenting trophies to the winning SUGs, Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare, IBBUL’s vice chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice chancellor (DVC, Administration), Professor Abu-kasim Adamu, congratulated the victorious students, and urged them to continue exhibiting exemplary leadership qualities.

He applauded LTI for organizing the competition, stressing that the SLEDT programme would help to enhance and promote the culture of academic excellence in the Nigerian university system. He charged the organizers of the leadership tournament to consolidate on their good work.

The universities that qualified for the tournament’s final include IBBUL, UDUS, FUAM, Ekiti State University (EKSU) and Federal University, Lafia (FUL).

The Dean of Student Affairs (DSAs) of the participating schools also attended the competition’s closing ceremony at Lapai.

Before activities of the grand finale commenced, Mr. Kings led a delegation of the four contesting institutions on a courtesy visit to the management of IBBUL. He expressed appreciation for the hospitality accorded them upon their arrival in the school.

While describing Professor Maiturare as a student-friendly VC, the LTI founder, said the idea behind organising SLEDT is to disabuse the minds of those who think unionism on campuses is all about hooliganism, and that most student bodies lack highly intelligent, responsible and disciplined youths.

Receiving the participants at the university’s Senate chamber, Maiturare, charged the students to judiciously utilise the rare opportunity given to them by their colleagues to offer meritorious service in their schools’ student associations.
