Rector, Kaduna Polytechnic, Prof Idris Mohammed Bugaje, yesterday, said he inherited N614, 806, 193.50 liabilities and claims, despite not receiving handing over notes from his predecessor.
Speaking when he received members of the House of Representatives Committee on Education at one of Nigeria’s leading polytechnics, Prof Bugaje said he also inherited over N615 million claims by the Polytechnic Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) members.
Speaking on the challenges faced by the institution, the Rector told the bewildered committee that the most daunting challenge was the level of dilapidation of the hostels and offices in the past four years.
He said, “When I came on board as the Rector, there was no handing over notes for me. I discovered that the polytechnic has been battling 50 court cases, and several of the school vehicles were seized where it cannot meet up with court orders.
“There is infrastructural decay in the institution, students defecate openly due to poor toilet facilities.”
Responding, chairman of the committee, Hon. Aminu Suleiman, expressed sympathy over the ugly financial and infrastructural situation in the Polytechnic.
Suleiman said the committee would set up a panel of investigation to get to the root of the decay, urging that the immediate past Rector and whoever was involved would be recalled to account for any misdeed.
