Human traffickers net $150bn annually– NAPTIP

The Director General, National Agency for the Prohibition of Traf- ficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Dame Julie Okah-Donli yesterday disclosed that proceeds from trafficking in hu- man beings globally grossed about 150 billion US Dollars.
She said organised criminal net- work and those involved in human trafficking never either give up the act nor admit they are traffickers until they are caught in the act.
Okah-Donli made this statement during a national walk to commemorate the 2018 world day against human trafficking in persons, and marking of the 15th anniversary of the Agency yesterday, in Abuja.
She pointed out that granting amnesty to traffickers will not resolve the problem because it is a chain.
She said: “Granting amnesty to traffickers will not resolve the problem because it is a chain which starts from transit and destination.
They should be treated as criminals because they don’t give a damn about lives, they do whatever, and hence they do not deserve to be given amnesty but be treated like hardened criminals.
Explaining further, she added that human trafficking is not about shipping out people abroad illegally.
According to her, it also has to do with having under aged house helps in ones abode adding that some of them are often prone to various forms of abuses by their bosses.
“Anyone who employs an under aged house help must be prosecuted and we have rescued quite a number of them who have been abused and we have prosecuted the bosses of such persons.
Presently, we are yet to convict or prosecute because most of the time they pay compensation depending on the enormity of the offences so as to serve as a deterrent,” she said.
