How to achieve LG financial autonomy, by Oyo Speaker

The Chairman Conference of Speakers of Nigeria and Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, has disclosed that local government financial autonomy can be achieved in Nigeria.

Rt Hon Ogundoyin said this on Wednesday while speaking at the Oyo South Senatorial District meeting of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held at Ido local government secretariat, Ibadan.

He declared that the financial autonomy can be achieved if the surrounding complexities and ambiguities are addressed, adding that resolving these issues would enhance service delivery, governance, community engagement, and economic development at the local government level.

“There is the need to clarify the Concurrent and Exclusive lists in Nigeria’s Constitution for effective local government financial autonomy.  Unlocking true LG autonomy will empower local communities, enabling them to respond better to community needs,” he said.

Rt Hon Ogundoyin added, “Recall that, Oyo State House of Assembly passed the administrative autonomy bill for local government. Local governments must be allowed to generate revenue independently among other issues.”

The speaker then tasked PDP members to intensify their membership drive and mobilisation efforts, citing unity and cooperation as crucial for the party’s success in future elections.
