How police charged us N100,000 to track my late son’s phone – Father of slain LASU graduate

The father of Quadri Ogunbode, the Lagos State University (LASU) gradute, who was allegedly murdered in Ojoo area of the Lagos state, has narrated how the police demanded one hundred thousand naira to track his missing, now late son’s phone.

Idowu Ogunbode, while narrating his odeal with newsmen in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, stated that it took the intervention of some human right activists to draw attention to the case, when it seems as though the police were complacent.

“What happened to my son occured  on Thursday night 16th March 2025. On Friday, his younger brother called me and informed me that he has not seen his brother and we went there on Saturday.

“When we get there on Saturday, his friends were in the police station (Ojoo) and his girlfriend was writing statement at the time we get there. After we left there, i went to his house to force his door opened, doubting that may be they locked him inside.

“We also went to a church because his girlfriend said he already told her that he arrived at the church. When we get there, we asked them if they help us see someone who came here on Thursday but they said they didn’t see anybody.

“We went back to police station to track his number but they told us that they don’t track on Saturday. So, we went back on Monday and we made a payment of N100,000 before they can help us track his number.

“After they tracked his number, they showed us the number he called recently and his brother went to bring his laptop to send money to his brother account and he later discovered that, there is no money in his account, and we went back to station to tell them and they asked us to go and get the statement of account.

“When we get the statement of account, we discovered that all his money has been withdrawn, where the person firstly withdraw N100,000 and he also used to it to buy recharge card while the total amount withdrew is N1.9Million. The police later tracked the boy and he was later apprehended”, he said

The 55-year-old bricklayer added that he only heard about his son death via the internet, despite paying for some other logistics to the police.

“When we get to Onipanti, we were asked to pay for logistics money and we pay them but we never hear anything again.

“So, when the issue now widely spread, we saw it on the internet where someone posted that he has died and my cousin was threatening the person that how did he know and what is his proof about it.

“So on Tuesday i also saw that his corpse has been exhumed from where they buried him and it was that boy that confessed to police about where they buried him.

“He also told police that, they asked for money from him and he said he didn’t have money and he has been giving them money before, but one Sheriff told them to search his phone and later discovered that there is money in his account and Sheriff also told them to take him back and he was beaten to death”, he added
