How explosion rocked Kaduna; Professor, 4 others feared dead

Tragedy struck in Sabon Tasha area of Kaduna state on Saturday following a gas explosion that killed no fewer than five people.

The gas explosion occurred on business premises located along Kachia Road, Sabon Tasha, in Chikun Local Government Area between 2.30pm and 3.00pm according to eyewitnesses.

Professor Simon Mallam, Chairman of Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, was feared killed in the explosion which shattered the windows of residential homes in the area.

It was learnt that the Professor had taken his grandson to a barber’s shop close to where a retail gas outlet is located when the incident happened.

Meanwhile, Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna state has consoled with families of those that lost their lives to gas explosion in Sabo Tasha, Kaduna on Saturday. 

El-Rufai, in a statement signed by the Kaduna state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, urged the families to take heart, while sympathising with those that sustained injuries in the explosion as well.

According to Aruwan, “the Kaduna state government has condoled the families that lost their loved ones following a gas explosion today. Our thoughts are with them in this sad moment. 

“The incident occurred in a business premises located along Kachia Road, Sabon Tasha, in Chikun local government area. 

“The State government also sympathized with the citizens that sustained injuries in the explosion. 

“The State government commends the emergency services, including fire fighters of both Kaduna state and the Federal Fire Service and the Red Cross. 

“The government has also expressed its gratitude to the security agencies that participated in the search and rescue exercise,” Aruwan said.
