HORTSON demands improved marketing channels on horticultural goods

The Horticultural Society of Nigeria (HORTSON) has called on the federal government to create improved marketing channels saying it is critical for better economic returns on horticultural goods.

HORTSON made the call after it annual conference which took place between November 18th – 22nd at the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State.

The body added that horticulture can be a panacea for sustainable growth and development of Nigeria as well as provide a leeway for diversifying the economy.

The association in a communiqué after the conference said one of the problem confronting sufficiency in food production and security in Nigeria is wastage, saying value addition should be given prominence in the country’s food system in order to attain food self sufficiency and security.

It further urged the government to pay adequate attention to agriculture through provision of infrastructure especially in rural areas and farming communities.

“Organic agricultural production should be promoted for improved health and environmental conservation. There should be less emphasis on genetically modified foods and products, due to controversies surrounding its safety for human health.”
