The Director General of the National Orientation Agency ( NOA), Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, on Friday charged Nigerians to hold elected leaders to their campaign promises.
Issa-Onilu gave the charge while speaking at a programme tagged “Citizens Conversation with Elected Public Officials” in Oyo state, Ibadan.
Represented by the Director, Political and Civic Education, Ethics and Value, Mrs. Adeola Adelaja, he said that “doing this will ensure that they address the genuine needs and aspirations of the people.”
The NOA boss, while emphasising the need for positive engagements of the leaders through the citizens, called on elected leaders to also live up to their billings.
“We must all ensure that we hold our elected leaders to their campaign promises, ensuring that they address the genuine needs and aspirations of the people,” he said, urging the citizens to “monitor the programmes of elected leaders and support them to succeed for the public good.”
Speaking further, he called on the people in the South to access the students loans and other programmes such as: Nigeria youth investments funds; redirecting funds from subsidies for critical investment; CNG initiatives; Siemens power project; conditional cash transfers; support for Nano businesses, amongst others, in the Renewed Hope Agenda like their northern states’ counterparts.
He said “with these, every citizen can enjoy improved economic opportunities, robust public services and a higher quality life.”
The chairman of Ibadan North local government area, Oluwatobi Oluwaseun Onifade, in his remarks, said being the closest tier of the government to the people, the local government “is key in carrying out interventions, policies and initiatives that are impactful.”
