Hijra 1446 AH: Civil servants in Kano, Kwara, Kebbi, others resume after one-day break

Civil servants in Kano, Kwara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kano and some northern states are expected to resume work Tuesday (today) after a one-day public holiday declared by the state governments to welcome Hijrah 1446, the new Islamic Calendar.

Muharam, the first month of the Islamic calendar, which commenced Sunday (July 7, 2024), is considered a sacred month in Islam.

Hijra, which literally means migration, symbolizes the movement of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and some of his followers from Mecca to Medina in the Year 622 CE.

In this month, Muslim faithful fast, pray, and actively engage in charitable acts for forgiveness and also upped their spiritual growth.

In their various messages, leaders of all shades urged the Muslim Ummah to remain resolute and pray for Nigeria in this trying time.

In Oyo state, Governor Seyi Makinde tasked Nigerians to use this year’s Hijrah celebration to pray for the peace, unity and progress of Nigeria.

The governor gave the task in a message by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon  Olanrewaju to congratulate Muslim faithful in Oyo and Nigeria on the 2024 Hijrah to commemorate the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah.

According to Makinde, Muslims and non-Muslims alike in the country should seize the opportunity of this season to reflect on these values and apply them to our lives as necessary.

He said, “It is my candid opinion that doing so would profit us individually and collectively.

“I implore everyone to use this Hijrah celebration to pray for the peace, unity and progress of our dear country, Nigeria.”

While praying that Hijrah 1446 be filled with the mercies and blessings of Almighty Allah, Governor Makinde urged Muslims to internalise the lessons of the season and the values exhibited by Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The governor also called on all citizens of Oyo state to sustain the religious harmony already existing in the state, saying, “As we commence Hijrah 1446, I urge Muslims and all citizens of Oyo State to imbibe the lessons of hard work, determination, perseverance, love, harmony, positivity and spreading goodness.
