Suspected Boko Haram insurgents yesterday launched an attack at the military base in Kanamma, the headquarters of Yunusari local government area of Yobe state.
According to Dauda Ali, who ran for his life from Kanamma to Geidam, “suspected gunmen attacked a military base in Kanamma and because of the heavy gun shots we had to run for our lives through bush to Geidam,” he said.
Another eyewitness, who did not want his name in print, confirmed the attack, saying “the gunmen came in large number around 4-5pm on Saturday and attacked the military. In fact the army were carried unaware because the area has been peaceful for some time.”
As at the time of filling in this report, Blueprint could not ascertain the number of causalities of the attack as efforts to speak with spokesman of the 3 Division Nigeria Army and the Police Commissioner, proved abortive.
It could be recalled that Kannamma was over-run by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in December 2014, in which the Divisional Police Officer Iliya Gambo was killed. Records also showed that Kannamma town was where the insurgents started their deadly activities 12 years ago before moving to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.
