Group urges humanitarian assistance, end to Ukpute, Shangev Tiev conflict

The Shangev-Tiev Assembly (STA) Thursday commended Governor Hyacinth Alia’s efforts to initiate boundary reestablishment to end the ongoing crisis between Shangev Tiev and the Ukpute community.

The STA, a socio-cultural group comprised of esteemed individuals from various fields, expressed deep sadness over the persistent crises that have resulted in loss of lives and property worth millions of Naira.

The group in a statement signed by the leader, Sir Peter Vande, expressed worry over the humanitarian crisis being experienced as a result of the dispute between the two communities, saying hundreds of families are displaced, homes destroyed, and children left without food or shelter.

The group also urged the governor to institute a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate and recommend sanctions while urging the assistance of federal, state, and local governments as well as NGOs to address the humanitarian emergency.

For years, the Shangev-Tiev and Ukpute crisis has plagued the communities, claiming  lives and causing millions of naira in property damage, despite repeated attempts at resolving the conflict by successive administrations.
