Group demands release of activist Wala from detention

A group known as ‘Free IG Wala Support Group’ has urged the Inspector General of Police to order the release an activist Ibrahim Garba Wala from detention or charge him to court to protect his fundamental rights.

Wala was said to have been in Police detention for more than a week now based on a petition against him.

But a group at a press conference in Abuja yesterday led by its chairman Barr. First Baba Isah and Secretary Aisha Mohammed said the frontline activist should be released or charge to court for trial.

Baba said: Few months ago, IG Wala stirred the honest’ nest when he started revealing startling information’s about the humongous corruption going on at the National Hajj Commission, telling how the Chairman, Abdullah Muktar is neck deep in the rottenness oozing from the commission.

“We heard that the chairman of the commission filed a suit in court against the activist which is well within the chairman’s rights. If he feels that anyone including Wala has infringed on his human rights or defame his character, he reserves the rights to approach the court of law for redress”.

The group however frowned at the arrest and detention by the Nigeria police saying; “The coercive apparatus of our state was unleashed on a fellow citizen in a most brazen manner. He was arrested and detained without a charge because he spoke against the powers that be”, they claimed.

According to the group, “This is bigger than Wala, it is about us, all of us activists and activism. It is about dissenting voices. We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to call the Inspector general of police to order by releasing Wala immediately. We call on every activist, advocates of peace, intellectuals and the International community to stand up and say No to this injustice.”
