Group alleges financial misappropriation at NEDC

The North East Youth Coalition for Good Governance, a coalition of civil society organisation, has asked the federal government and the National Assembly to beam searchlight on the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

The coalition, led by its chairman, Calvin Goino, in a press statement issued to newsmen Thursday, accused the Managing Director of the Commission, Mohammed Goni Alkali, of financial misappropriation and award of contracts without approval by the board.

The group alleged that a contract for the rehabilitation of the Commission’s headquarters in Maiduguri without approval by the board was responsible for internal wrangling amongst members of the board.

Goino said the Commission should partner with experts and consultants who will help to provide the road-map similar to the era of the Petroleum Trust Fund during the Abacha regime in order to create the right impacts on the people.

Efforts to confirm the allegations from the managing director of the Commission proved abortive as he was said to be unavailable for comments, but a board member, Chief David Sabo Kante, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “I am not aware of any financial impropriety because all approvals for contract award must seek approval from the board and we have not been contacted for any approval.”
