Oyo: Makinde commissions phase 1 of 11 megawatt Ibadan Hybrid power plant

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state on Friday said the state was committed to nursing sustainable development and energy independence

The governor, who said this in Ibadan while inaugurating Phase 1 of the 11MW Ibadan Hybrid Power Plant (IBHP), disclosed that the inauguration marked  a significant milestone in his administration’s push for sustainable energy solutions.

According to the governor, the plant stands as a “game-changer” for the state and that it would deliver uninterrupted power to vital institutions while reducing the state’s carbon footprint.

“This project underscores our commitment to sustainable development and energy independence. By leveraging renewable sources, we align Oyo State with global efforts to combat climate change,” he said.

“With the completion of this phase, Oyo State moves closer to energy independence. The plant’s 5MW capacity: 4MW from gas and 1MW from solar, accounts for approximately seven per cent of the state’s current energy needs. While this may seem small, it represents a significant step forward.”

The governor expressed confidence that the state would not only achieve energy self-sufficiency, but also export electricity to neighbouring countries like the Republic of Benin.
