Gov Dickson Unity Cup begins in Ogbia today

The much publicized maiden Governor Dickson Unity Cup, tagged ‘The Ogbia Challenge’, will kick off today in Bayelsa state.
No fewer than 32 communities in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State are expected to participate in the football competition aimed at taking the youths away from social vices such as cultism, robbery and kidnapping.
In the first phase of the tournament, 16 communities from four different zones in the area namely Opume, Kolo, Otuokpoti and Imiringi will be battling for supremacy before the second round.
Speaking at the Official Mascot Unveiling Ceremony of the tournament in Yenagoa, Commissioner for Information in Bayelsa State and Sponsor of the competition, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, stated that talents discovered from the competition will be nurtured and taken to greater heights in football.
He added that arrangements have been concluded to bring scouts from European countries to monitor the competition with the aim of spotting such talents.
“We are using this competition to send out a clear message to our youths in particular; that they should shun cultism, drug abuse and every other social vices, and rather, concentrate all of that energy to something very productive,” the commissioner said.
“And you all know how important the game of football is. Football is perhaps, one very important platform to unify our people.”
