Give us constitutional roles, Ekiti monarch begs FG

The Onijan of Ijan-Ekiti in Gbonyin local government area of Ekiti state, Oba Adebanji Aladesuyi, has called on the federal government to give constitutional roles to traditional rulers in the country.

He made the call weekend while fielding questions from reporters shortly after the celebration of his first year coronation anniversary held in his domain at Ijan-Ekiti.

The traditional ruler said: “We ask the federal government to give the traditional rulers the opportunity to exert some functions that could be beneficial to our subjects.

“As a traditional ruler, there must be some level of responsibilities. There must have been some roles that should have been carved out that monarchs should be doing as his responsibilities in the society.

“I think it is apt for the government to give traditional rulers the responsibilities that would have constitutional backing however little it might be in as much that the three arms of government, the legislature, executive and the judiciary have their own roles to play.”
