Kano state Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, at the weekend, directed its Anti-corruption and Public Complaints Commission to investigate the activities of 44 local government councils to ascertain their level of accountability and delivery of good governance to the people.
He gave the order while exchanging views with the management of the commission led by its Executive Chairman, at the Government House in Kano, stressing that the government had already directed for the establishment of Commission’s offices in all the local councils for ease of work.
Ganduje also directed the agency to investigate the allegation that some civil servants in the state “who are over 60 years of age” were still in service even with some workers receiving double salary.
He reiterated that his administration would not interfere in the work of the anti-corruption agency, pointing out that doing so would guarantee its independence and ability to work without fear of intimidation from any quarters.
“Doing your work without obstruction is doing our work effectively. Your Commission is no more a dumping ground of public officers; the Commission is now a ground where only those who achieved results, those who are reliable, those who believe in sanitising the system and society would be found.”
The governor reiterated that his administration would continue fighting corruption at all levels particularly considering the fact that central APC government under President Buhari accords priority to the anti corruption crusade.
On his part, the agency’s executive chairman, Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, told the governor that since the appointment of its new management, recently, the agency had received 693 complaints and that over 100 had been resolved.
Gado called on the government to enact a legislation that would allow the agency to sanction media outfits that “violate their professional ethics, especially in cases where the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) appears nonchalant.”
He also appealed for the recruitment of more staff and training for them in order to cover all the 44 local government councils efficiently.
