Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state has effected the release of 14 inmates serving currently serving various jail terms in Kano Central prison.
Making the disclosure during this year’s Eid el-Kabir Sallah festivities in Kano, Ganduje said the gesture was extended to the prisoners for them to become responsible citizens in future, adding that the release was effected after he had agreed to settle the fine slammed on them upon their respective conviction.
He said compassion and magnanimity was an attribute expected to be exhibited by any Muslim, most especially when one was in dire need of assistance, stressing that letting the 14 convicted prisoners off the hook would make them to reconsider future intention to commit crimes.
He said: “As we have effected your release, you are equally expected to be of good and unquestionable conduct. Committing crimes does not pay under whatever pretext your colleagues in prison would love to regain their freedom.
“Try as much as you can to prove that you are really grateful for the gesture by becoming responsible citizens in future. Our society would undoubtedly be better off if the level of crimes reduces to the barest minimum.”
The governor maintained that no society could ever develop with crimes taking a heavy toll on its people, stressing that where development was remarkably achieved the rate of crimes was relatively at low ebb.
