Motorists plying Damaturu-Buniyadi-Magza road in Yobe state have showered encomiums on Governor Ibrahim Gaidam for reconstructing the federal road constructed few years after Nigeria’s independence.
The road had served as the main route for the people of southern Borno and former Gongola state but due to its age it became dilapidated, hence the governor awarded the contract in 2016 for its total reconstruction, including the Katarko Bridge, blown off by the Boko Haram insurgents.
Our correspondent, who plied the road this week, reports that 68 km out of the 77 km road awarded has been reconstructed and tarred. He also had a stopover at Bunigari and Buratai, the home town of the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Tukur Buratai where the communities praised the governor for the excellent work.
One of the villagers, Goni Ali Bunigari said “we sincerely commend the governor of Yobe state for reconstructing the road. Before now it took about three hours to cover the 77 km distance, but look at it now, in just one and half hours you can go to Damaturu, make purchases and come back.”
As for Yamta Hassan of Buratai, he said: “The governor tried seriously, it now remains the portion of the Borno axis, the work is very slow only 2 kilometers was reconstructed in two years, concerned authorities need to do something.”
Blueprint gathered that governor Gaidam had within years of his administration, constructed over 1000km federal and state roads across the state while more roads are being earmarked for construction in 2018 as he prepares to leaves office come May, 2019.
