Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, is set to graduate 3, 490 students for the 2013/2014 academic session out of which 34 graduated in first class category.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Mushau Akanji, stated this yesterday in a press conference on the activities lined up for the 24th convocation of the university slated for Saturday.
He explained that 811 other students got second class upper with 1363 in second class lower division, while 648 others got third class and 47 pass degrees.
Akanji said the graduands included those from affiliated institutions of Federal College of Education (Technical) Akoka and Potiskum and Kaduna Polytechnic.
He said that the former Chief Judge of the Federation, Justice Legbo Kutigi, was scheduled to on Friday deliver the convocation lecture entitled “the role of law in the enhancement of socio-economic growth of the nation.”
He said the university had moved to the 6th position in Nigeria and 57th in Africa according to global ranking of universities, adding that “this is significant improvement in academic profile and we are committed to improving on it.”
The vice-chancellor described the lack of hotel accommodation for students as “a major challenge facing the university authority,” adding that “for a student population of 16,000 we have only 2,250 bed spaces on campus.”
He said consequently, a large percentage of students had to reside outside the campus, adding that “this has a lot of implication needs on daily basis, especially on transportation.”
He thanked President Goodluck Jonathan and the governor of Niger state, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, for their financial and moral support to the university.
