The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra state on Monday commenced sensitisation exercise against over-speeding and over-loading by motorists in the state.
The state Sector Commander, Mr. Hygeinus Omeje, said at the occasion in Awka that over-loading and over-speeding were mostly responsible for road traffic accidents.
“In most of the rescue operations we carried out, it was discovered that over-speeding and overloading were the cause of road traffic accidents especially on Enugu/Onitsha and Onitsha/Owerri express ways,” he said.
The sector commander said the sensitisation exercise would be followed by intense prosecution of defaulters in its special mobile court sessions.
He enjoined passengers not to risk their lives joining overloaded vehicles and always caution drivers against over-speeding.
Declaring the exercise open, the Permanent Secretary in the state ministry of transport, Mr. Nwabuonu Ogbaji, said the state government would continue to rehabilitate and construct roads for safer trips.
While commending the FRSC and the sponsors of the campaign, Dozzy Group of Companies, Ogbaji urged members of the public to refrain from dumping or abandoning their vehicles on the road side.
Our correspondent reports that the sensitisation exercise would also be carried out in Onitsha and Nnewi towns.
