Britain’s Aljaz Bedene reached the third round of the French Open for the first time with a five-set victory against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta.
Bedene, 26, could now face world number one Novak Djokovic after his hard-fought 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 4-6 5-7 6-2 win.
It was an impressive show of resolve from the Slovenia-born player, who surrendered a two-set advantage.
However, he recovered his poise in a dominant fifth-set performance against a dangerous opponent.
He now awaits the winner of the game between Djokovic and veteran Belgian Steve Darcis.
Compatriot Andy Murray reached the third round with victory over Mathias Bourgue on Wednesday.
Busta was struggling to cover the court in the final stages, but Bedene’s performance was full of grit and determination as he showed he could mix it with a European clay-court specialist.
“This was an excellent victory by Bedene because he was up against a fine clay court player, and admits his confidence is fragile after winning only two main draw matches in five tournaments before Roland Garros.
“He was helped by the left thigh injury which restricted Carreno Busta’s final set movement, but finished strongly having seen a two-set lead evaporate.
“His 13 aces were the bedrock of victory, along with the ability to draw the Spaniard away from his comfort zone behind the baseline by use of the drop shot.
“Bedene’s recent poor form stems from the ITF’s decision that he cannot represent GB in the Olympics or Davis Cup. The LTA is actively considering another appeal on his behalf, but a final decision is not expected until after Wimbledon.”
