For the third time, Edo government renames university

Edo state governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the change of the name of “Edo State University, Uzairue,” to now be known as “Edo University, Iyamho”.

A statement issued on Monday by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor said, “all documentations in respect of the Institution henceforth shall reflect the above change.”

The development brings to three times the 10-year-old university has had its name changed by the government.

In March 2024, the Edo State House of Assembly  passed an executive bill for a law to establish the institution and name it at the time, “University of Science and Technology at Uzairue” in  Etsako-West Local Government Area of the state.

However, the university was afterwards renamed Edo State University, Iyamo.

Established during former Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s administration, the university was located in his Iyamo country home.

The institution witnessed another name change in 2020 during former governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration. This time, it was named Edo University, Uzairue.

The renaming at the time was consequent upon the amendment of the law establishing the institution.
