Flooding: PAVE harps on implementation of urban development plans

Partnership Against Violence Extremism (PAVE) says urban development plans must be implemented and reviewed periodically to prevent the blockage of water pathways and ensure faster response to disasters.

PAVE in press release signed by the Chair Steering Committee PAVE Network, Jaye Gaskia, and member of the Network from Coalition for Democracy and Progress Borno, Prof. Abubakar Muazu and others also called that other existing infrastructure, including bridges and roads, must be reviewed to ensure they are safe, durable, and capable of supporting rescue operations during emergencies.

They urged governments at all levels must respond to early warning signs effectively and utilize all available media channels for public sensitization and mobilization.

They said there is a need to strengthen emergency response capacities, provide proper accommodation and care for displaced persons, and address the needs of disaster management agencies to ensure effective response.

On Security and Food Security Implications, the network said the destruction and displacement caused by flooding further compromise the security of affected communities, increasing their vulnerability to threats.

“PAVE calls on the government to undertake regular security threat assessments and implement appropriate response plans to ensure the safety and security of displaced persons.

“Additionally, the flooding has severely impacted livelihoods, particularly in the agricultural sector.

“We urge the State and Federal Governments to conduct food security assessments and provide support to rebuild destroyed farms and livelihoods, to prevent drastic levels of food insecurity and restore productivity.

“PAVE remains committed to working with all stakeholders to address the challenges arising from this disaster.

“We call on the government, civil society, and the international community to come together in solidarity to support affected communities, prevent further loss of life, and work towards sustainable solutions for mitigating future flooding incidents.
Signed, Partnership Against Violence Extremism (PAVE),” he said.
