First Lady launches debt settlement for 1,000 Zamfara prison inmates

Wife of Zamfara state governor,  Hajiya Hurriyya Dauda Lawal, has inaugurated a debt settlement initiative for no fewer than 1000 individuals across the 19 emirate councils in the state.

This is contained in a statement signed by the senior special on media and communication to the wife of the governor, Hajiya Zara’u Musa, and made available to Blueprint in Gusau, Wednesday.

According to the statement, the event was held at the State Zakkat Collection, Distribution, and Endowment Board where the first lady stated that the initiative was aimed at reuniting families of those in prison, restore dignity, and empower individuals to become self-reliant.

The governor’s wife highlighted that Governor Dauda Lawal had directed the Zakkat and Endowment Board to intervene in settling debts, particularly for those taken to correctional centres due to their inability to pay.

She emphasised that a committee has been set up under the Grand Khadi, alongside the Comptroller of Prisons and Ulamas, saddled with the responsibility of settling debts and helping to mend broken marriages.

Huriyya Dauda Lawal further provided cash grants and bags of rice to the beneficiaries to promote self-reliance and urged them to avoid taking out loans to maintain their dignity.

“I would like to inform the good citizens of our dear state that the Executive Governor of Zamfara State, His Excellency Governor Dauda Lawal is making significant efforts to ease the suffering of the privileged and vulnerable across the state,” Huriyya said.
