Firm petitions IGP, seeks investigation over alleged job scam

A Firm Japatru Ltd, belonging to Mr Daniel Akpai, has written a petition to the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Criminal Investigations Department, Force headquarters, demanding investigation on the alleged scam perpetrated against his company by one Susan Ade Coker.

The petition dated 22 March 2024, was written by Ojonimi S. Apeh Esq. on behalf of Daniel Akpai the Managing Director.

In the petition, Apeh urged the DIG “to fish out and prosecute the alleged fraudulent act of Susan Ade Coker to face the course of justice which may serve as a strong source of deterrence to other would be offenders.

Apeh stated that problem started
sometimes in November 2023; when Susan Coker informed his client (Daniel Akpai) that she has a Certificate of Sponsorship (COS) and license to employ people to work in the hospitality and factory sector in the United Kingdom from Nigeria.

“Consequent upon the information above and in furtherance to other negotiations and understanding with Susan Ade Coker, our Client being a company duly registered under the Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and doing the business of processing electronic documents, particularly Certificate of Sponsorship (COS) used for obtaining
work visas for her clients in the United Kingdom, decided to recruit workers for the said available job in the United Kingdom and therefore made payment of the sum of 25,000,000 (Twenty Five Million Naira Only) and £15,069 (Fifteen Thousand, Sixty Nine Great British Pounds Sterling) for and on behalf of his clients to Susan Ade Coker” the petitioner stated.

Apeh wrote that Mr Akpai prior to recruiting clients was told by Susan Coker, in confidence that the time frame/limit for processing of the Certificate of Sponsorship (COS) will be within the period of 8 (eight) weeks.

However, Susan Coker subsequently changed to a period of 10 (ten) weeks after collecting money from our client, the petitioner wrote.

“It is our Client’s instruction that in view of the time frame of eight (8) weeks and/or ten (10) weeks which she gave as the period within which to process and deliver the documents, the Certificate of Sponsorship (COS) ought to have been out on or before the 31st day of January 2024.

“But unfortunately, the Certificates of Sponsorship (COS) are yet to be out including now that we are writing this petition” Apeh informed the DIG.

After waiting patiently for Susan Coker and did not get any update on his clients’ Certificates of Sponsorship (COS), Mr Akpai made some personal investigation and found that she has relocated to the United Kingdom unknowingly to him.

Also, it was found out that Susan Coker did not have any Certificate of Sponsorship (COS) or license to employ people to work in the hospitality and factory sector in the United Kingdom from Nigeria.

According to the lawyer, his client confronted Susan Coker and demanded explanations from her as to why he gave him false impression.

“But to our client’s dismay, she
confirmed to him that she was indeed not licensed, but working on the process to be licensed. Upon this discovery, our Client immediately requested for a refund of all the money paid and she assured our client that all his clients’ Certificates of Sponsorship
(COS) will be out on or before the 29th of February 2024 or the money will be paid back to him.

“But instead of giving our client the Certificate of Sponsorship or refunding our Client his money on or before the 29th day of February 2024, she gave another excuse.
